The weekend before Thanksgiving my wife noticed the smell of gas coming from the cabinet next to the stove. We called the gas company who came out and confirmed that we had a leak. The gas company was unable to fix the leak and let us know we needed to have a plumber come out. In the meantime they would need to shut off the gas to the stove until it was fixed. A friend had recently used Pallan Plumbing and highly recommended that we give them a call. Shon from Pallan Plumbing replied promptly and was able to get out to our house on Tuesday. He showed up on time and was very knowledgable and professional. He quickly diagnosed the issue and was able to resolve the leak with minimal disruption to the surrounding cabinetry. Pallan Plumbing saved our Thanksgiving, and for that I highly recommend them for any plubming needs!

Shon has come to help twice with two different issues I have had with my gas lines for my fire pit. Shon is trustworthy. It took me a couple months to finally call a plumber for issue #1. When issue #2 came up (completely different item), I text him that day, and he was out 2 days later and fixed it, just nice to have someone you can trust. He just did some work at a friends house and they said the experience was the same.

Our Water & Gas Leak Detection Process
Every water or gas leak requires a methodical and safety-first approach. At our plumbing company, we follow a proven, step-by-step process to accurately diagnose and resolve any leak.
Step 1: Initial Consultation & Safety Assessment
- We gather information from the property owner and conduct a full safety check. For gas leaks, this includes testing for hazardous levels and shutting off supply lines if needed.
Step 2: Precision Leak Detection
- Using professional-grade acoustic sensors, pressure testing, and gas sniffers, we locate the exact source of the leak, regardless of the location.
Step 4: Expert Repair or Replacement
- Our licensed plumbers perform the repair using code-compliant materials and methods.
Step 3: Detailed Diagnosis & Plan of Action
- Once the leak is located, we provide a clear explanation of the issue and offer a written repair plan, including timeframes, required parts, and cost breakdown.
Step 5: Final Testing & Verification
- After repairs, we run pressure tests and leak detection scans again to guarantee that the issue is fully resolved and that all systems are safe to operate.
Experiencing These Water & Gas Issues? Here’s What They Mean
Unexplained increase in water bills
Even a small, continuous leak can waste hundreds of gallons per month without visible signs.
Smell of sulfur or "rotten eggs"
This odor is caused by mercaptan, a chemical added to natural gas for safety. If you smell it, leave the property and contact emergency services or your gas utility.
Hissing sounds near gas appliances
The sound may be faint but should never be ignored, as it could indicate a dangerous leak. Shut off the gas supply and call a licensed professional immediately.
Water stains on ceilings or walls
These stains often appear yellowish or brown and may grow over time.
Mold growth or musty odor indoors
Mold can thrive in dark, damp environments behind walls, under floors, or inside cabinets.
Pilot light going out repeatedly
It may also signal a malfunctioning thermocouple or blocked vent, but gas line leaks are a common root cause.

Leaking Water Heaters or Gas Water Heaters
- Possible Causes: Internal tank corrosion, worn-out valves, or failed connections.
- Solution: Replace faulty components or install a new unit; verify gas connections and ventilation if applicable.

- Possible Causes: Loose or cracked flex connectors or improper installation.
- Solution: Disconnect appliance, install new connector to code, and test with gas leak solution or electronic sniffer.
Gas Meter to Home Line Leaks
- Possible Causes: Soil erosion, mechanical damage, or pipe fatigue near the meter.
- Solution: Coordinate with utility provider, isolate damaged section, and replace with durable, approved piping.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell the difference between a water leak and condensation?
A water leak usually leaves consistent wet spots, stains, or dripping sounds, while condensation tends to appear temporarily on cool surfaces like pipes or windows. If moisture keeps returning in the same area or grows in volume, it’s likely a leak, not condensation.
Are gas leaks more common in older homes?
Yes, older homes are more prone to gas leaks due to aging piping systems, outdated materials, and wear around joints or connectors.
Can tree roots cause underground water leaks?
Yes, tree roots can invade or put pressure on underground water lines, causing cracks or blockages.
How do plumbers detect leaks without breaking walls or floors?
Professional plumbers use tools like acoustic sensors, thermal imaging, and gas sniffers to pinpoint leak locations.
Do gas leaks always produce an odor?
Most natural gas is odorized with a sulfur-like scent, but not all gas leaks smell strong. Small or slow leaks may go unnoticed without specialized detection tools.
Will homeowners insurance cover water or gas leak damage?
Coverage depends on your policy and the cause of the leak. Sudden, accidental leaks may be covered, but slow, unnoticed damage or lack of maintenance often isn’t.
