Pallan Plumbing
Private Sewer Lateral Inspection

A Private Sewer Lateral Inspection is a detailed assessment of the underground pipe connecting your home’s (or business’s) plumbing to the public sewer system. This inspection helps identify issues like cracks, root intrusion, or blockages that can lead to costly repairs if left untreated. We can conduct regular private sewer lateral inspections and save a lot of trouble.

The weekend before Thanksgiving my wife noticed the smell of gas coming from the cabinet next to the stove. We called the gas company who came out and confirmed that we had a leak. The gas company was unable to fix the leak and let us know we needed to have a plumber come out. In the meantime they would need to shut off the gas to the stove until it was fixed. A friend had recently used Pallan Plumbing and highly recommended that we give them a call. Shon from Pallan Plumbing replied promptly and was able to get out to our house on Tuesday. He showed up on time and was very knowledgable and professional. He quickly diagnosed the issue and was able to resolve the leak with minimal disruption to the surrounding cabinetry. Pallan Plumbing saved our Thanksgiving, and for that I highly recommend them for any plubming needs!

Shon has come to help twice with two different issues I have had with my gas lines for my fire pit. Shon is trustworthy. It took me a couple months to finally call a plumber for issue #1. When issue #2 came up (completely different item), I text him that day, and he was out 2 days later and fixed it, just nice to have someone you can trust. He just did some work at a friends house and they said the experience was the same.

Residential Private Sewer Lateral Inspection
A residential private sewer lateral inspection involves evaluating the pipe that connects a home’s plumbing system to the municipal sewer line. This pipe can develop issues over time such as cracks, corrosion, root intrusion, or blockages that are not visible from the surface. Using advanced camera technology, inspectors can locate the exact location and nature of any problem without invasive digging. These inspections are commonly required during real estate transactions, major renovations, or by local ordinances. Regular inspections help homeowners avoid unexpected sewer backups and expensive emergency repairs.

Commercial Private Sewer Lateral Inspection
A commercial private sewer lateral inspection is a critical service for property managers, business owners, restaurants, offices, and developers to assess the condition of sewer lines that connect commercial buildings to the public sewer system. These laterals handle higher volumes of wastewater and may experience more frequent wear due to heavier use. Inspections typically involve high-resolution video equipment and may include flow testing or dye testing to comply with local health and environmental regulations. Early detection of issues is a way to fight costly downtime, violations, and service interruptions.

Our Private Sewer Lateral Inspection Process
Every property presents a unique set of conditions, which is why our private sewer lateral inspections follow a proven, step-by-step process
Step 1: Initial Site Evaluation
- We begin by reviewing property access, identifying cleanout locations, verifying any requirements from local municipalities, and whatever else is necessary.
Step 2: System Access and Preparation
- Our technicians locate or install access points as needed, clearing the path to insert inspection equipment without causing damage.
Step 4: Condition Reporting and Compliance Review
- You'll receive a detailed written report with images or video, highlighting the pipe's condition and noting any code violations or areas of concern.
Step 3: High-Definition Video Inspection
- We use a high-resolution sewer camera to inspect the full length of the lateral, capturing live footage and recording any visible damage, blockages, or structural concerns.
Step 5: Recommendations and Next Steps
- Based on our findings, we advise on any repairs, maintenance, or further testing needed, along with timelines and cost estimates where applicable.
Experiencing These Sewer Lateral Issues? Here’s What They Mean
Frequent Drain Backups
May indicate a blockage or partial collapse in the lateral line. This requires immediate inspection, as repeated backups can lead to health risks.
Unpleasant Odors Outdoors or Indoors
Persistent odors signal a serious breach in the system that may worsen if not addressed promptly.
Soggy or Sunken Areas in Yard
Could be caused by a leak or break in the lateral allowing wastewater to saturate the soil. Left unchecked, this undermines landscaping, attracts pests, and damages your foundation.
Slow-Draining Fixtures Throughout the Property
Suggests a restriction or obstruction further down the main lateral.
Unexplained Mold or Mildew Inside
Potential result of sewer gas infiltration due to pipe cracks or loose connections. Besides indicating a plumbing problem, this can also create unhealthy indoor air quality over time.
Common Sewer Lateral Problems We Fix
Root Intrusion
- Possible Causes: Tree roots seeking moisture find their way into pipe joints or cracks.
- Solution: Mechanically remove roots and install root barriers or reline the pipe to seal entry points.
Pipe Cracks or Fractures
- Possible Causes: Age-related wear, shifting soil, or temperature extremes.
- Solution: Sectional pipe replacement or trenchless pipe lining, depending on severity.
Blockages and Build-Up
- Possible Causes: Accumulated grease, debris, or non-flushable items over time.
- Solution: High-pressure hydro jetting and ongoing maintenance recommendations.
Pipe Misalignment or Offsets
- Possible Causes: Ground movement or poor initial installation.
- Solution: Dig-and-repair or trenchless correction depending on location and depth.
Deteriorated or Corroded Pipes
- Possible Causes: Older clay, cast iron, or Orangeburg pipes breaking down over decades.
- Solution: Full lateral replacement or CIPP lining to restore integrity.
Bellied or Sagging Pipes
- Possible Causes: Improper slope or settled ground creating a low point in the pipe.
- Solution: Excavation and regrading of pipe section to restore proper flow.

Private Sewer Lateral Inspection
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a sewer lateral inspection help with real estate transactions?
A sewer lateral inspection is often required during the home buying process so the new owner can see for himself that the sewer system is in good condition. It provides potential buyers with an in-depth view of the property’s plumbing and helps them avoid inheriting costly issues after purchase.
Are private sewer lateral inspections covered by home insurance?
Generally, home insurance does not cover the cost of private sewer lateral inspections. However, certain damage or repairs to the lateral may be covered, depending on the policy and the cause of the issue. It’s best to check with your insurance provider for specific details.
How can I prepare my property for a private sewer lateral inspection?
To prepare for the inspection, clear access points like cleanouts and check there are no obstacles around the area where the inspection will take place. If necessary, mark any areas that require attention to help the technician get to the inspection site quickly and efficiently.
Is it necessary to get a private sewer lateral inspection if I'm not experiencing any plumbing problems?
Even if you’re not experiencing issues, it’s wise to schedule an inspection as a preventive measure. Sewer laterals can develop problems over time without noticeable symptoms, so early detection is key.
