The weekend before Thanksgiving my wife noticed the smell of gas coming from the cabinet next to the stove. We called the gas company who came out and confirmed that we had a leak. The gas company was unable to fix the leak and let us know we needed to have a plumber come out. In the meantime they would need to shut off the gas to the stove until it was fixed. A friend had recently used Pallan Plumbing and highly recommended that we give them a call. Shon from Pallan Plumbing replied promptly and was able to get out to our house on Tuesday. He showed up on time and was very knowledgable and professional. He quickly diagnosed the issue and was able to resolve the leak with minimal disruption to the surrounding cabinetry. Pallan Plumbing saved our Thanksgiving, and for that I highly recommend them for any plubming needs!

Shon has come to help twice with two different issues I have had with my gas lines for my fire pit. Shon is trustworthy. It took me a couple months to finally call a plumber for issue #1. When issue #2 came up (completely different item), I text him that day, and he was out 2 days later and fixed it, just nice to have someone you can trust. He just did some work at a friends house and they said the experience was the same.

Experiencing These Garbage Disposal Issues? Here’s What They Mean

Unit hums but doesn't spin

Often caused by a jammed flywheel or seized motor. In many cases, the unit’s reset button or manual crank (if available) can help clear the jam safely.

Water backs up into the sink

May indicate a clogged drain line or blockage in the P-trap. This can also lead to slow draining and unpleasant odors if not addressed quickly.

Unusual noises (metallic grinding, rattling)

Could mean foreign objects are stuck in the grinding chamber. Running the disposal in this condition may damage the impellers or internal components.

Frequent resets or power shutoffs

Typically a sign of motor overload or internal short circuits. If the issue persists after resetting, the unit may be nearing the end of its service life.

Leaking from the bottom of the unit

Often the result of a cracked housing or failed internal seal. Unfortunately, this type of leak usually requires a full unit replacement, not just a repair.

Odors that don't go away

Buildup of food debris inside the chamber or worn seals trapping waste. Deep cleaning and inspecting the splash guard or seals often helps eliminate lingering smells.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on how many people live in your home and how often you cook. A 1/3 or 1/2 horsepower unit may be enough for small households, but larger families should consider 3/4 or 1 horsepower models for better performance and durability.

Not all sinks are compatible, but most standard kitchen sinks can accommodate a garbage disposal. The key factors are space under the sink, access to an electrical outlet, and proper drain alignment. Deep or farmhouse sinks may require special fittings or lower-profile units.

On average, a garbage disposal lasts 8 to 15 years with regular use and proper care. Lower-end models may need replacement sooner, while higher-quality units with stainless steel parts tend to last longer. Maintenance and what you put down the drain play a big role in lifespan.

Avoid putting fibrous vegetables (like celery), coffee grounds, grease, bones, pasta, rice, and eggshells into the disposal. These items can clog or damage the unit and your plumbing. When in doubt, throw it in the trash or compost.

They can be, but it’s important to use them wisely. Frequent use may overload smaller septic tanks, so choose a septic-safe disposal model and avoid grinding large quantities of food. Consult us or a plumber familiar with septic systems before installing.
